Well-known western legends, though controversial, and in more than one instance criminal in character, made their stay in several Central Montana communities. The likes of Rattlesnake Jake, Calamity Jane, Kid Curry and other members of the Hole in the Wall gang visited from time to time within the mining and ranching communities. No doubt, their reputation was only enhanced with each reoccurring visit.

In the Culver photograph (on the left) showing Maiden, circa 1886, one can easily imagine the excitement within a town of nearly 1500 people. Stories have been told that suggested there were numerous saloons and similiar places to obtain refreshments, as quoted once in "Hoofprints, Vol. 20, No. 1", " 38 places in the town where hard liquors could be obtained."
